Exciting things are happening in the classrooms and gardens of the Kyrene School District. Thanks to a generous contribution from Vlada’s Seeds of Life, students across the district are beginning a hands-on journey into gardening, sustainability, and healthy living.

Through the organization’s expanding Little Sprouts Program, Kyrene schools received an incredible donation of 3,000 heirloom seed packets, valued at approximately $6,000. These seeds will be planted, studied, and nurtured by students who are learning firsthand how food grows and how nature works.

Learning Begins in the Garden

At Kyrene Centennial Middle School, the excitement is already underway. Students, alongside teacher Mr. Carras, have begun preparing the soil in the school’s raised garden beds. With shovels in hand and curiosity in mind, they are transforming outdoor space into a living classroom.

But gardening here is about more than just planting seeds.

Before anything goes into the ground, students are studying important environmental factors such as:

  • Sun patterns across the campus
  • Soil composition and health
  • Water needs for different plants
  • Seasonal growing cycles

By understanding these elements, students learn the science behind successful gardening while developing problem-solving and observation skills.

The Power of the Little Sprouts Program

The Little Sprouts Program was created to help schools introduce children to the joys and benefits of gardening. Through seed donations and educational support, the program encourages students to:

🌿 Learn where food comes from
🌿 Develop healthy eating habits
🌿 Explore science through real-world experiences
🌿 Build teamwork and responsibility
🌿 Connect with nature

What starts as a simple seed planted in the soil can quickly grow into a powerful educational experience.

Growing More Than Just Plants

Programs like this help children see that food doesn’t just appear in grocery stores—it begins with soil, sunlight, water, and care. Students gain a deeper appreciation for nature and for the work involved in growing healthy food.

School gardens also create opportunities for creativity and community. Students often take what they learn home, inspiring families to start gardens of their own. In many cases, a small school garden becomes the spark that leads to healthier communities.

A Special Thank You

We would also like to extend a special thank you to our board member, Victor Neuman, whose support and dedication helped expand the Little Sprouts initiative into Arizona. His efforts played an important role in building partnerships and opening the door for programs like this to reach students in the Arizona.

A Garden That Will Keep Growing

The donation from Vlada’s Seeds of Life is helping the Kyrene School District cultivate more than vegetables and herbs—it’s helping grow knowledge, curiosity, and confidence in young learners.

With enthusiastic students, dedicated educators like Mr. Carras, and thousands of seeds ready to sprout, Kyrene’s gardens are well on their way to becoming thriving centers of learning.

And this is only the beginning.

As the Little Sprouts initiative continues to expand across the country, more schools will have the opportunity to plant seeds that grow not only into plants—but into lifelong lessons.
