Growing More Than Trees: A Vision for Community Citrus Orchards

A few years ago, during early conversations with the City of Temecula, Vlada introduced an idea that continues to feel both simple and powerful: transforming a portion of a public park into a living, fruit-bearing orchard.

The vision was rooted in purpose. Rather than dedicating valuable land and water resources solely to decorative shrubs, why not invest in something that gives back to the community in a more meaningful way? By planting citrus trees—such as lemon trees—in thoughtfully designed spaces, public parks could become not only more beautiful, but also productive and educational.

The proposed orchard would be located near an apartment complex serving low-income families, creating a unique opportunity for children and their families to engage directly with nature. Here, they could experience firsthand how a fruit tree grows—from bud to blossom to fruit. They could observe the delicate balance of the ecosystem, watching bees pollinate flowers, birds interact with the trees, and insects play their essential roles.

At its heart, this idea is about connection: reconnecting people with where their food comes from, fostering curiosity, and creating moments of discovery right in their neighborhood. Imagine children picking fresh lemons, learning how they grow, and then taking them home to make lemonade or family recipes. The orchard becomes a classroom without walls—one that teaches sustainability, patience, and appreciation for the natural world.

Recently, there has been an exciting and meaningful development in this journey. Vlada heard back from the team behind the demonstration garden project at the Margarita Recreation Center, sharing that significant progress has finally been made. They are now anticipating an official grand opening in the coming months—a wonderful milestone and a testament to the persistence and dedication behind the effort.

Even more encouraging, they expressed interest in reconnecting once the garden is open and programming is finalized, to revisit the possibility of establishing the citrus garden as a future phase of the project. This news is incredibly exciting. The idea of a community citrus orchard has remained close to Vlada’s heart over the years, and its potential impact and beauty have been a constant source of inspiration.

Vlada has already shared her continued enthusiasm and eagerness to meet again, to explore how this vision can be brought to life collaboratively. Through Seeds of Life, she also plans to support the initiative by donating citrus trees for planting—helping lay the foundation for a space that nourishes both people and community spirit.

The hope is not only to establish one thriving orchard, but to spark similar initiatives in public parks everywhere—transforming underutilized spaces into vibrant, food-producing landscapes. Spaces where children learn by doing, families gather and share, and nature becomes both teacher and provider.
