A box of heirloom seeds—has blossomed into a powerful community initiative, demonstrating the growing impact of Vlada’s Seeds of Life and its youth-centered program, Little Sprouts. Through partnerships with local organizations like the Home Gardens Library, these efforts are helping transform access to fresh food, environmental education, and community engagement in areas that need it most.

This summer, the Home Gardens community will experience that impact firsthand through a dynamic “Book to Action” program led by Branch Manager Nancy Reiter. Designed to address the challenges of living in a food desert—where access to fresh, healthy produce is limited—the program combines literacy, sustainability, and hands-on learning.

The series begins with a Storytime featuring Alice Waters Cooks Up a Food Revolution by Diane Stanley, setting the tone for a deeper understanding of food systems, gardening, and environmental stewardship. But this isn’t just about reading—it’s about action. Families will leave not only inspired, but equipped with their own small garden kits, made possible by the donated heirloom seeds.

From there, the program grows into a rich schedule of workshops. Community members will learn sustainable gardening practices from Soulful Soil Farms, explore composting with a Riverside County Master Composter, and dive into soil health with educators from the Riverside–Corona Resource Conservation District. Each session builds practical knowledge while reinforcing a deeper connection to the environment.

Creativity also plays a role. A gourd art workshop highlights how agricultural products can be repurposed into something beautiful, blending sustainability with artistic expression. And the series concludes by bringing it all full circle—connecting gardening to nutrition through a hands-on healthy eating workshop focused on fresh ingredients and simple recipes.

What makes this initiative especially meaningful is its ripple effect. These aren’t one-time experiences—they’re seeds planted in families, encouraging long-term habits around growing food, reducing waste, and making healthier choices. In communities where fresh produce is not always easily accessible, this kind of empowerment can be transformative.

The contribution from Vlada’s Seeds of Life and Little Sprouts goes beyond the physical seeds—it nurtures knowledge, confidence, and community resilience. It shows that small acts of generosity and giving back can spark lasting change, especially when paired with education and local collaboration.

As these gardens begin to grow, so too does something even more important: a stronger, healthier, and more connected community
