For those of us who love to garden and live in the city, Community Gardens are a perfect solution.  Moving from a half-acre in Poway, California, where we had ample property for our vegetable garden, we found our solution just steps away from our front door, the Civita Community Garden.  It is here that we have shared garden space to cultivate and continue our passion for gardening.

The Master Gardener of San Diego kicks off each gardening season with an informative session advising us on maintaining sustainable community gardens and encourages plot owners to have the opportunity to better understand how to grow fresh and healthy produce.

Our community garden offers the opportunity to not only nurture seedlings, but also friendships.  My husband and I share our produce and learnings from fellow plot neighbors.  Our small plot builds memories with our grandchildren as they run their hands through the dirt and dig the holes for each plant with excitement.  Many children love to join us at the garden especially during cherry tomato picking time.  It is awesome seeing the kids enjoy the sweet tomatoes going quickly from plant to mouth!  Their favorite activity is watering the plants, the only issue is that they want to water all the other plots and each other, too.

“Why try to explain miracles to your kids when you can just have them plant a garden?”

Robert Brault

Nothing is better than walking to the garden with our family and hand picking the vegetables for our Sunday dinner.  Our granddaughter chooses the vegetable which has introduced new tastes.  She and her Pop Pop enjoy their time together at the garden and is now more aware of the source of our dinner veggies.
